This is my first portrait of one of my dogs. Skye was my first Cardigan Welsh Corgi. He has a bit too much coat for the breed standard but it was fun to paint.

Looks like a mean Skye, but a great great job on both this and the baseball Le'o! I can't wait to see more of your work! You're incredibly talented!!!!

Interesting. I had that thought too but really he was resting in the shade, eyes half closed for the glare of our first sunny day in a week. Chloë said she thought he looked regal and with his coat there's something very leonine about him here.

Wow! Nice job with color and he has that half awake look Bridger gives when lounging around. I think it's tough to catch the blue eyes because most people read them as cold, but that changes when you know the dogs. Whiskers? or too nit-picky for this style of painting? Not sure. The only thing I notice is a bit of loss of depth of field as you approach the stop, going up the nose. I'm not sure what to suggest to define it, it's been too long since I painted.

Very nice job, my rambling notwithstanding. Oil or acrylic? or something else? Doesn't matter, you've obviously chosen a field where you have talent. Can't wait to see what's next!

Thanks Jenn. The whiskers really didn't catch the light very much and I didn't want them to be a distraction by making them more obvious. Dogs and children don't sit long enough for me to paint from life. (See my response to your comment on "two hours later.") So I painted this from a photo I took. I agree there's some loss on the nose area. Cameras don't see as much range in color as the human eye. This is really obvious in colors perceived as white and black in photos. In future portraits I plan on taking the photo for drawing purposes only and relying on my eye more.

And I forgot to answer one question. These are oils. I also like watercolor, gouache and drawing with various mediums.

I was actually thinking he looked very relaxed. I think the colors are beautiful. My only nit pick would be that at a glance it looks a bit more like a Collie than a Cardi because of the long full ruff. But otherwise very very good job! I wish I could get back into painting. I used to do a ton of art as a kid...

I agree with "regal".

Now I usually picture Skye in my mind with his blue eyes wide open and a big stoopid grin on his face. That's Skye-blue-pink to me.

As far as technique: that I don't judge.

I can see where you guys would say Regal, and Le'o, I can see the eyes half squinted in the light thing... very obvious now that I know :) You're doing an excellent job, and like Carolyn, I cannot comment on technique because I can't paint a stick person ;-) I'm envious of your talent (tho you did get me to pull out my flute and sheet music again and brush up on an almost long lost talent... Thank you)

Who do I think I am?
